Frequently asked questions about hejmint

Bewerbung und Einschreibung für hejmint

What school-leaving qualification do I need, and how important is my grade?

To take part in hejmint, you must hold a general university entrance qualification, a vocational baccalaureate or a subject-specific university entrance qualification. hejmint is designed to guide you through the wide range of study and career opportunities in the STEM fields – it doesn’t matter whether you took maths as an advanced course or what your average mark was in your school-leaving certificate.

Your final school leaving grade only becomes important when, after the taster course, you apply for a place at university: you can only study so-called ‘restricted-entry’ subjects (‘NC subjects’) if you have a specific minimum grade.

Important: To take part inhejmint, we do not check whether your university entrance qualification entitles you to study at Darmstadt University of Applied Sciences. Should you decide to study at h_da after the taster course, your university entrance qualification will be checked when you apply for a place. You can find out everything else you need to know about admission to Darmstadt University of Applied Sciences here.

Can I apply to hejmint with a (specialised) A-level qualification obtained abroad?

You can apply to hejmint with a foreign university entrance qualification (HZB). Following an introductory interview and confirmation of admission by the hejmint team, the formal application is submitted via uni-assist.

There, your qualification obtained abroad will be assessed to determine whether it entitles you to study in Germany and at h_da. If the assessment is successful, uni-assist will forward your application details to Darmstadt University of Applied Sciences. A processing fee is payable to uni-assist. We recommend that you apply as early as possible.

As all hejmint courses are taught and conducted in German, you must provide evidence of sufficient German language proficiency for your application and admission.

Can I apply if I haven’t received my (vocational) A-level certificate by the application deadline?

If you do not yet have your (specialised) A-level certificate by the application deadline, you can apply using your most recent half-yearly report and submit your A-level certificate at a later date.

Does a home-based degree count as a first degree?

During your hejmint semester at Darmstadt University of Applied Sciences, you will be enrolled under the ‘pre-degree’ status. hejmint therefore does not count as your first degree programme. Consequently, the transition from hejmint to your actual degree programme is not regarded as a change of subject and will therefore not affect your BAföG entitlement.

I would like to change direction after dropping out of university or a vocational training programme. Can I still take part?

Yes, you can.hejmint is for anyone who wants to explore new directions or change their career path and is interested in STEM subjects.

I’m already studying or have started a vocational training programme. Can I take part as well?

hejmint is designed as a full-time programme. It will not be possible to undertake another degree course or vocational training alongside it due to time constraints.

What can I expect during the introductory and consultation meeting?

We’d like to use this chat to give you the chance to get to know us and the programme, and to ask any questions you might still have. That way, you’ll have a better idea of what to expect when you sign up forthe taster course. And of course, we’re looking forward to getting to know you and finding out what your expectations and interests are. That way, we can tailor the programme better to your interests. :)

I have applied and received confirmation of my registration. What should I do if I decide I don’t want to take part after all?

Your registration for the taster course becomes binding upon receipt of our confirmation of registration. If, for valid reasons, you are unable to take part inhejmint after all, please let us know in writing as soon as possible so that we can admit interested participants from the waiting list to the programme.

During the orientation programme

Am I eligible for BAföG as a participant?

Unfortunately, the current BAföG regulations do not allow BAföG funding for hejmint, as you, as a hejmint participant, are not undertaking a regular degree programme.

Can I also find out about degree programmes and departments on hejmint that aren’t part of the STEM subjects?

If you’re interested in degree programmes or modules beyond STEM subjects, please feel free to mention this during your introductory meeting. We’ll then work with the relevant departments to find ways for you to find out more about them.

Where can I do my industrial placement?

Darmstadt University of Applied Sciences has a number of partnerships with major companies in the Darmstadt region. We’d be happy to advise you on choosing an industrial placement and help you with your application.

Is the industrial placement a compulsory part of hejmint?

The industry placement is an optional component and is therefore voluntary. It’s a great opportunity to gain a realistic insight into the professional world of your choice, get to know potential employers and tick off the pre-placement requirement.

Can I use hejmint to shorten the duration of my degree/training?

Exams you sit during the trial period may be recognised as part of your subsequent degree programme. This means you won’t have to retake these modules later, allowing you to start your degree more relaxed thanks to a less demanding timetable.

For every exam you have sat and passed, you will receive written confirmation. You can submit this to Darmstadt University of Applied Sciences or other universities for recognition.

Important: The decision on whether to recognise academic achievements and examination results is made by the respective higher education institutions. Recognition is usually granted upon application to the relevant examination board for the degree programme in question.

What happens if I fail an exam?

For exams you sit as part of the taster course, you will be given an extra attempt. If you fail an exam, that attempt simply won’t count. This means that when you start your degree programme later on, it will be as if that exam attempt had never taken place.

Do I have to take part in hejmint right until the end, even if I’ve already decided on a vocational training course or a degree programme during the programme?

If you’ve already decided on a degree course or vocational training programme during your taster programme, you don’t need to attend the courses and sessions right to the end. Just let us know when your time with us is over, and we’ll help you make the transition to your chosen vocational training programme or degree course.
